Webcams capture Garden Route‘s awesome sites (EP Herald Friday, 15 December 2006)
A George-based company is extending its network of webcams along the Garden Route to include more comprehensive coverage of George, Wilderness and Knysna – including a highly sophisticated camera which will capture trains coming in and out of the George railway station.
Midafricam started its operation with a trial site in Victoria Bay in December 2003 that provided surfers with a view of wave conditions. A second was added in August 2004 on the roof of the Oakhill High School in Knysna providing a spectacular view through the Knysna Heads.
Later that year, another was added in the Kaaimans Gorge for a view over the route of the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe. This camera was later redirected to view the devastation resulting from the floods in August, the progress of the repairs to the Kaaimans Pass and the gradual demise of the famous A-frame house above the railway line.
Justin Miles and his business partner John Durrer, the driving forces in the webcam company, are now extending the coverage of their website to include more camera sites in George, Wilderness, Knysna and other potential locations still under development. Although concentrating on Garden Route sites, they also installed and manage one webcam in Cape Town which has its sights on Table Mountain.
Miles‘s current project is the commissioning of a webcam in George station that is one of the most sophisticated of its kind as it is activated by the sound of approaching trains.
In this way it will allow train spotters around the world to view, and archive by video clips, the movements of steam and diesel trains in and out of George station. Due to be in action at the end of this year, this camera will be the first on their website to store video clips for later streaming over the internet. Miles said: “We have a considerable outlay in cameras, antennae and installation for each site, so we are asking for a nominal subscription fee for some of the sites to recover our costs.” A typical still camera site costs R10 000 to set up, a video site R25 000 and with an added weather station the costs can rise to R35 000 at the most advanced installations.
Future plans include a webcam with a view over Wilderness beach from Victoria Bay to Gerickes Point and another view of the Knysna Heads from the NSRI base, which are both planned for January next year.
Others under consideration include a view of Wilderness station, the Ebb and Flow bridge over the Touw River, the N2 Bridge over Swartvlei near Sedgefield, and perhaps in the longer term a view over Mossel Bay.
